Why Being a Perfectionist Can Be Harmful

If you are a perfectionist, you are probably familiar with the feeling of wanting to get everything just right. You may struggle with handing in papers, agonize over projects at work, and even worry about small errors from the past. High standards are one thing, but perfectionism  is quite another. And as some researchers have discovered, pursuing perfection can have serious consequences to both mental and physical well being. What Is Perfectionism? According to researchers, perfectionists hold themselves to unrealistically  high standards  and become self-critical if they believe they haven’t met these standards. Perfectionists are also likely to feel guilt and shame if they experience failures, which often leads them to avoid situations where they are worried they might fail. Amanda Ruggeri, writing about perfectionism for BBC Future, explains, â€Å"When  [perfectionists] don’t succeed, they don’t just feel disappointment about how they did. They feel shame about who they are.† How Perfectionism Can Be Harmful Although many people see the pursuit of excellence as a good thing, researchers have found that on the extreme end, perfectionism is actually linked to lower mental health. In one study, researchers analyzed how perfectionism was related to mental health across previous studies. They looked at a total of 284 studies (with over 57,000 participants) and found that perfectionism was associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders. They also found that people higher in perfectionism (i.e. participants who more strongly identified with perfectionist traits) also reported higher levels of overall psychological distress. In an article published in 2016, researchers looked at how perfectionism and depression were related over time. They found that people higher in perfectionism tended to have increases in depression symptoms, which suggests that perfectionism may be a risk factor for developing depression. In other words, although people may think of their perfectionism as something that helps them succeed, it appears that their perfectionism may actually be harmful for their mental health. Is perfectionism always harmful? Psychologists have debated this point, with some suggesting that there can be such a thing as adaptive perfectionism, in which people hold themselves to high standards without engaging in self-criticism over mistakes they make. Some researchers have suggested that a healthier form of perfectionism involves pursuing goals because you want to, and not blaming yourself if you fail to meet a goal. However, other  researchers suggest that perfectionism is not adaptive: according to these researchers, perfectionism is more than just holding yourself to high standards, and they don’t think perfectionism is beneficial. Is Perfectionism on the Rise? In one study, researchers looked at how perfectionism has changed over time. The researchers reviewed previously collected data from over 41,000 college students, from 1989 to 2016. They found that over the time period studied, college students reported increasing levels of perfectionism: they held themselves to higher standards, felt there were higher expectations placed on them, and held others to higher standards. Importantly, what increased the most were the social expectations that young adults picked up on from the surrounding environment. The researchers hypothesize that this could be because society is increasingly competitive: college students might pick up on these pressures from their parents and from society, which would increase perfectionist tendencies. How to Combat Perfectionism Since perfectionism is associated with negative outcomes, what can someone with perfectionist tendencies do to change their behavior? Although people are sometimes hesitant to give up their perfectionist tendencies, psychologists point out that giving up on perfection doesn’t mean being less successful. In fact, because mistakes are an important part of learning and growing, embracing imperfection can actually help us in the long run. One possible alternative to perfectionism involves developing what psychologists call a growth mindset. Researchers at Stanford University have found that cultivating a growth mindset is a crucial way to help us learn from our failures. Unlike those with fixed mindsets (who see their skill levels as innate and unchangeable), those with growth mindsets believe they can improve their abilities by learning from their mistakes. Psychologists point out that parents can play a crucial role in helping their children develop healthier attitudes towards failure: they can praise their children for making an effort (even if their results were imperfect) and help children learn to persevere when they make mistakes. Another potential alternative to perfectionism is to cultivate self-compassion. To understand self-compassion, think about how you would respond to a close friend if they made a mistake. Odds are, you’d probably respond with kindness and understanding, knowing that your friend meant well. The idea behind self-compassion is that we should treat ourselves kindly when we make mistakes, remind ourselves that mistakes are part of being human, and avoid being consumed by negative emotions. As Ruggeri points out for BBC Future, self-compassion can be beneficial for mental health, but perfectionists tend not to treat themselves in compassionate ways. If you’re interested in trying to foster more self-compassion, the researcher who developed the concept of self-compassion has a short exercise you can try. Psychologists have also suggested that cognitive behavioral therapy can be a way to help people change their beliefs about perfectionism. Although perfectionism is linked to lower mental health, the good news is that perfectionism is something you can change. By working to see mistakes as learning opportunities, and replacing self-criticism with self-compassion, it’s possible to overcome perfectionism and develop a healthier way of setting goals for yourself. Theme Of Love In The Canterbury Tales - 887 Words

Literature has played a major role in conveying messages of love throughout the centuries. There exists many tales and accounts that teach important lessons to the society. The writers have taken the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings about the society as a whole. For instance, in these Canterbury Tales, love has been painted in many different ways. This paper is going to explore the theme of love in these three chosen Canterbury Tales: the Knight’s Tale, the Wife of Bath’s Tale, and the Miller’s Tale. â€Å"The Knight’s Tale† is the first story in the Canterbury Tales. In â€Å"The Knight’s Tale†, love is portrayed like a disease that has the power to change the health and physical appearance of those whose love is not well†¦show more content†¦However, as she goes on with her tale, she begins to describe her love for money and how much she has made through holding back her existent feelings. Overall, she states that love given freely is cheap and meaningless. Further on into the text, the Wife of Bath’s speaks of how she loved Jankyn, her husband. At this time, the reader is able to depict that Wife of Bath is talking about real love to represent the feelings she has for Jankyn (Chaucer 181). One is able to finally connect the â€Å"Wife of Bath’s Tale† theme of love as it is obvious that after accumulating wealth from the many husbands, she finally settles down to marry a poor fellow, Jankyn. She finally got to be with t he man she longed for which for her depicts real love. In â€Å"The Miller’s Tale†, a complete mockery is made of love and everything it stands for. Chaucer makes courtly love seem so insensitive by talking about the characters in a very sexual manner and their deeds, â€Å"She was a primrose, and a tender chicken/ For any lord to lay upon his bed,/ Or yet for any good yeoman to wed.† (â€Å"The Miller’s Tale† 165-167). C. Delores Tucker Social Activist and Politician

Overview Cynthia Delores Tucker was a civil rights activist, politician and advocate for African-American women. Best known for her participation in theand later for taking a strongly condemning misogynistic and violent rap lyrics, Tucker advocated for the rights of women and minority groups in the United States. Accomplishments 1968: Appointed chair of Pennsylvania Black Democratic Committee 1971: First woman and first African-American secretary of state in Pennsylvania. 1975: First African-American woman to be elected as vice president of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party 1976: First African-American to be appointed as president of the National Federation of Democratic Women 1984: Elected as chair of the Democratic Party’s National Black Caucus; Co-founder and chair of the National Congress of Black Women 1991: Established and served as president of the Bethune-DuBois Institute, Inc The Life and Career of C. Delores Tucker Tucker was born Cynthia Delores Nottage on October 4, 1927 in Philadelphia. Her father, the Reverend Whitfield Notttage was an immigrant from the Bahamas and her mother, Captilda was a devout Christian and feminist.   Tucker was the tenth of thirteen children. After graduating from Philadelphia High School for Girls, Tucker attended Temple University, majoring in finance and real estate. Following her graduation, Tucker attended the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. In 1951, Tucker married William â€Å"Bill† Tucker. The couple worked in real estate and insurance sales together. Tucker was involved in local NAACP efforts and other civil rights organizations throughout her life. During the 1960s Tucker was appointed as an officer of a local office of the national civil rights organization. Working with activist Cecil Moore, Tucker fought to end racist employment practices in Philadelphia’s post office and construction departments. Most notably, in 1965 Tucker organized a delegation from Philadelphia to participate in the Selma to Montgomery march with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a result of Tucker’s work as a social activist, by 1968, she was appointed as chair of the Pennsylvania Black Democratic Committee. In 1971, Tucker became the first African-American woman to be appointed as Pennsylvania’s secretary of state. In this position, Tucker established the first Commission on the Status of Women. Four years later, Tucker was appointed as the vice president of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. She was the first African-American woman to hold this position. And in 1976, Tucker became the first black president of the National Federation of Democratic Women. By 1984, Tucker was elected as chair of the Democratic Party’s National Black Caucus. That same year, Tucker returned to her roots as a social activist to work with Shirley Chisolm. Together, the women established the National Congress of Black Women. By 1991, Tucker founded the Bethune-DuBois Institute, Inc. The purpose was to help African-American children develop their cultural awareness through educational programs and scholarships. In addition to establishing organizations to help African-American woman and child, Tucker launched a campaign against rap artists whose lyrics promoted violence and misogyny. Working with conservative politician Bill Bennett, Tucker lobbied companies such as Time Warner Inc. for providing financial support to companies who profited from rap music. Death Tucker died on October 12, 2005 after a long illness.   Quotes â€Å"Never again will black women be disregarded. Organizations believe that team-oriented work can contribute more towards the performance, productivity and employee satisfaction and consequently the success. Effective teams require efficient leaders and the leadership skills matter the most to make the people work together effectively. From the present case study, it can be seen that Dharma has been efficiently handling Helping Hands since five years and under her able leadership, the organization was growing steadily. Due to the increasing workload, she had to handover the team leadership responsibilities to Jenny, who has been an efficient employee of the not for profit organization for five years. Dharma did not have the time to train her as the changes happened very quickly. However, after the appointment of Jenny to the new role and responsibility, there had been chaos in the team and it was on the verge of breaking down. The staff members broke do wn into groups with conflicts among them and Jenny criticized them publicly over their mistakes. From the case study, the identified key issues were that Jenny was not trained to be a leader and even after being a diligent employee, she lacked leadership skills. Her lack of leadership skills, management decisions, team building efficiencies and managing staff members was the reason for all the pitfalls that the organization faced during the change period. The present report will critically analyze the problem and recommend effective solutions. Literature Research The decision of the management towards the employees of an organization can have deep impacts on their efficiency and effectiveness. The way in which the management makes the decision, interacts with the employees and delegates the responsibilities affects the entire organization. The leadership style of the management can have direct effects on the output of the organization (Michalski 2012). Leaders who fail to solicit the input of the employees often found to distort the information required to fit the needs. One-sided decisions made by the management without considering the voice of the employees significantly reduce the efficiency and effectiveness, resulting in employee dissatisfaction and decreased productivity (Eccles, Ioannou and Serafeim, 2014). Efficient leadership is the key to motivation as it affects the employee behavior and motivates them to accomplish the goals of the organization. Along with this, motivation also helps the employees to achieve their career and personal goals, which is very important from the perspective of mutual success and growth of the employees and the organization. Motivation and leadership are interactive and the effectiveness of leadership is dependent on the ability of the leaders to motivate the employees towards a collective mission, vision and goal (Day et al. 2014). Therefore, the leaders should be well aware of their expertise and ability to bring out the best of their employees. Building up a cohesive team is another important aspect of the leadership skills because a strong and cohesive team has the ability to achieve anything. Trust is the foundation for building up the cohesiveness and without it, the team is simply a collection of individuals (Tseng and Yeh 2013). However talented the employees may be, if there is no cohesiveness, they will never be able to achieve full potential. With the incorporation of trust, the individuals become stronger as they are no longer considered alone but part of a cohesive and effective team. With mutual trust, the team will be motivated to achieve the meaningful goals of the organization (Wei and Wu 2013). Managing the staff members in the periods of change is an important action of the leader as change brings about personal impact on the employees of the organization. Change management facilitates the management and the leaders to handle change effectively and helps to address the wider and tangible impacts of the change. The leader should focus on the employees and ensure that the change is applied smoothly and thoroughly, with lasting implementation (Cameron and Green 2015). The challenges emerged due to the change have to be thoroughly analyzed by the leader with respect to the responsibilities and activities of the employees of the organization. Problem Analysis From the literature research, the various theoretical approaches have been discussed that can have positive impacts on the leadership abilities. Critically analyzing the literature with respect to the case study can exhibit a bigger picture of the issue. The decisions of the management affect the organizational effectiveness and efficiency. This factor is quite evident from the case study where the decision of Dharma proved to be faulty one for Helping Hands. She appointed Jenny to a management role that was newly created without consulting her employees. The criteria for her selection of Jenny for the senior position was her past records of high levels of commitment and motivation to the families and organizations that Helping Hands work for. However, Dharma neither estimated the leadership abilities of Jenny nor gave her the required training. Therefore, her decision of appointing Jenny affected the organization badly. Effective motivation is an important characteristic of leadership where Jenny was an absolute disaster. It is common for the employees to commit mistake and this should be handled professionally, without hurting the self-respect of the employees. However, Jenny took the extreme step to criticize the staff members publicly and insulting them on their mistakes. This caused them to take the decision of leaving the organization and the attrition rate increased rapidly. Instead of motivating the employees, Jenny de-motivated, criticized and insulted them. Building up a cohesive team is a crucial point for achieving the goals of the organization. Instead of building up a cohesive team, the leadership of Jenny made the staff members to break up into two different groups and created a conflict among them. There has been a thorough breakdown in the teams after Jenny took up the responsibility and this was not accepted well by the employees. They decided to leave the organization without getting into the tension that flicked due to the employee dissatisfaction. Managing the staff members efficiently in the periods of change leads to the building up of a well-structured organization and developed teams. Again, Jenny was a complete failure in this as employees felt that they were not important to the organization and not valued anymore. During the transition period, Jenny failed to be aligned with the team members and failed to develop a better and efficient team and caused the team members to fall apart. Thus, the entire concept of appointing Jenny as the management leader proved to be a complete blunder that was made abruptly. Conclusion From the above report, it can be said that Dharma had the superficial concept of the performance of Jenny and she was not aware of her managerial abilities. This lead to a crisis in the organization especially when it was growing. Kerzner (2013) opined that the management should adopt a methodology for effective implementation of its decisions. Abrupt decisions can only affect the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization. However, Robbins et al. (2013) argued that the management decisions related to the policies of human resource, cultural factors and structural design could determine largely the innovation levels within the organization. Both the literature point towards a common factor that management decisions should be planned rather than abrupt to avoid the pitfalls. Daft (2014) stated that the feedback and attention of the supervisor provides a psychological boost to the employees and motivates them and the path-goal theory explained by the author demonstrated this fact rationally, with the possibilities to increase motivation. On the contrary, Hackman and Johnson (2013) put forward the theory that effective leaders demonstrate a stronger motivational leadership when compared with the leaders who do not have a strong need for power. From all these arguments, it is obvious that all the literature claim that strong leadership skills are very much important for the success and growth of an organization and as it was missing in Jenny, Helping Hands was in a terrible position. Recommendations To get rid of the present turmoil situation, Dharma needs to appoint a leader with efficient leadership skills, who will focus on building up a well-developed team. An effective team is focused towards the goals of the organization and the leader makes them understand the bigger picture. Each member of the team must have a clear context of his or her responsibilities as it increases commitment, improves quality and promotes collaboration. The leader should set a common goal for the entire team that is clearly relevant to the tasks of the team (McFarlane and Cooper 2014). Working and understanding towards achieving these common goals increase the effectiveness of the team drastically. Measurable metrics associated with the goals determine the improvement and effectiveness of the team. The collaboration of the team as a single unit will increase the interdependency awareness of the members. The leader should encourage interdependency and collaboration as it would tend to reduce the bla ming behavior and the potential opportunities for improvement and learning will get stimulated (Yukl 2012). The leader should work towards providing the necessary structure and support for the team by putting the right people together. The natural skills of the members should be considered while their selection in the team and even distribution of the work among them.
